Making a Primitive Fish Hook

Learn to make a primitive fishing hook using natural materials such as bone, roots and wood. Steve will teach you the craft of making a hook and leader line and talk you through various fishing methods used throughout history. An hour long workshop in which you'll learn some craft, technique and incite into our hunter gatherer past.

What are we going to do:

Short talk on primitive fish hook varieties and the materials used

Learn to safely and efficiently carve the wooden shank and the techniques to work with bone to create the barb

Learn a binding technique using spruce roots to attach the barb

Learn a 3 strand technique to make your leader line from horse hair

Finish up with a talk on how to attach to a main line and bait it up

About The Speaker

Steven is a primitive skills and Bushcraft instructor and craftsman, based in Sussex.  Steve and his wife Kirsty run Axe & Paddle Bushcraft, teaching a range of crafts such as Paddle Carving, Moccasin Making and Fur Tanning.

Primarily Steve enjoys making and recreating primitive artefacts - anything from primitive fishing hooks to sinew backed bows and he also makes a range of high quality ‘old-style’ camping bags and tents and carves solid wood canoe paddles.  He can turn his hand to any craft, with a fine eye for detail.  His passion for primitive skills and Bushcraft was born when his mother showed him a book about Native American Crafts, and he subsequently set about learning each of the skills he read about and making replicas of the crafts he saw.
