Living by Nature

Gijs Staghouwer

I am Gijs Staghouwer. I have been interested in nature for as long as I can remember, and since I discovered Bushcraft I feel at home. In February of 2018 I started a year-long education at Living by Nature. I finished that education in September 2019 with a final expedition to Sweden.

In the education I became acquainted with many subjects and crafts that came to light in the program. Particularly interesting and fun to me was the ‘bow crafting’, but I am also growing more appreciative of tanning leather. The fact that I am able to create my own clothing with this skill completes the picture for me.

The year-long program has made me realize that wood is an important component in many different crafts. It has been used for many different things since time immemorial. Wood is my biggest interest, partly due to it being rather abundant and because it is relatively easy to work. Woodworking can be translated to many different aspects, like for instance making cups, bowls, bow-and-arrows or making a fire. The amazing thing about wood is that it has been alive. Therefore every piece of wood feels unique, smells differently and should be worked differently. Ashwood, for instance, has very long fibers and can therefore be bent easily. Beechwood on the other hand has very short fibers, making it difficult to bend without snapping it. Both types of wood have their pros and cons. As you can see, I am very fond of wood.

Thanks to Living by Nature , I have gotten acquainted with the more primal aspects of wood: the ancient crafts of our ancestors from the stone age, and now I would like to learn more about them. Luckily, I am still at the beginning of my Bushcraft-career, so I have plenty of time left to learn and discover. That’s why I am now working on my Instructor training at Living by Nature, so I can continue to develop my own skills and one day pass them on to others.

I feel like the more I know, the more I get the feeling that I don’t know. In other words, the more I know, the more I realize that I don’t know it all (yet).
