Highland Yurts

Paul Spencer

Paul Spencer is the owner and creator of Highland Yurts. He is based in the remote Highlands of Scotland, living in a small family cottage, and his yurt, in the Cairngorms National Park. His yurts are tested by deep snow falls, high winds, and horizontal rain, thus ensuring the durability of his yurts in a challenging climate.

Paul started making Mongolian yurts 14 years ago after receiving a yurt-making course gift voucher and, once he had made a few yurts, he travelled to Mongolia to research and experience native yurts and nomadic living.

Originally, Paul was trained as a pattern cutter in the clothing trade and so adapted easily to making yurts, boat and tent covers, as well as traditional upholstery.

Paul’s travels have taken him around the UK and abroad, making yurts for glamping sites, outdoor nurseries, yoga retreats and alternative living projects. You may see his yurts perched on an Austrian mountain side or on remote windy islands of the West Coast. Paul’s yurts have also become popular with forest schools and bush craft groups as they make great base camps.

Paul was also the first person to invent and make a Hobbit-style yurt at Peter Gabriel’s WOMAD Festival. This faerie-tale yurt is very eye-catching and has proven to be extremely popular. His hope is to share this niche knowledge of yurt making and bring it forward to the next generation.

Only the most environmentally low-impact methods and materials are used. Every aspect of the yurt is fashioned by hand and individually tailored. Thus, his yurts are not only extremely robust, but also made with character and individual charm.
